Alexandria has a new spot for coffee, breakfast and drinks. Java Grill opened its doors on King Street in mid-January, replacing Bread and Chocolate, which had been in operation in that space for more than 40 years. While the focus is coffee, the menu has you covered from morning, when it offers breakfast favorites like omelets, quiche and pastries, into the evening, when bottles of wine and craft beer are popped open.
The focus at Java Grill is customization. Coffee drinkers are encouraged to select their own coffee beans (varieties like Vietnamese and Kona are available) from a set of barrels, put them in a cup, and hand it to a barista, who’ll grind the beans and make your drink right before your eyes. When the weather gets warmer, Java Grill will unveil the rolled gelato station, where you’ll get to choose your flavor(s) as well as your toppings. Make sure to stop by the pastry display, which has so many desserts, from chocolate croissants to strawberry mousse cheesecake to a swan-shaped cream puff that it will be hard to pick just one.
