The Shelby Artists: Clifton Henri

As you have read in our previous posts, an intrinsic element of The Shelby community is the people that helped to create it.  These ‘artists and craftsmen’ are the people that have actualized our vision.  It is important to us that we share with you the stories behind the talented people that have dedicated their time to creating a place for you to call home.

Welcome to our series, The Shelby Artists.

MEET: PHOTOGRAPHER, CLIFTON HENRI

CH

Essentially, I am a storyteller…and the job of any great storyteller is to tell tales that not only convey emotion and imagination, but ignite them. My photography, which I affectionately describe as Film Stills from a broader American Story, are themed in the spirit of nostalgia, where stories of personal growth, social concerns and life struggles can be told. These images are meant to empower and inspire all those that witness them, which also happens to be the creative pulse behind my body of work.

Award-Winning Photographer, Clifton Henri has worked with clients such as Disney, McDonalds, Dow Chemical, The Chicago Sun-Times… and is currently touring the country. His work is in the spirit of nostalgia, allowing stories of personal growth, social concerns and life struggles can be told. His images are meant to empower and inspire all those that witness them, which also happens to be the creative pulse behind his body of work.

Clifton is influenced by imagery from the Civil Rights Movement and the Harlem Renaissance, the works of James VanDerZee, Gordon Parks, and Roy DeCarava. Their ability to capture emotion, intrigue the mind, and tell a story are what inspire Clifton and fuel his commitment to produce work that is just as effective.

You can view Clifton’s work in the women’s room leading out to the pool area immediately off of the Lobby in The Shelby.

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Clifton about his work featured in The Shelby.

1. What piece(s) do you have in The Shelby?

I have a piece titled ‘3 going on 33‘ matted and framed in The Shelby.

2. What was the inspiration behind this piece?

This piece was an attempt to capture the desire of our children to be like their parents; capturing the transformative process and experiences we can all relate to either as parents or even further back as children. Much of my work is based on experience and nostalgia.

3. What does ‘Americana’ mean to you?

Americana, to me, is a direct reflection of my experiences and memories of being American. Being African-American makes my experiences different from those who aren’t, however there are some very basic human experiences we as Americans can all relate to.That’s Americana. It’s baseball, basketball, public parks, hot dogs, candy stores, best friends, growing up, and everything that entails. Americana for me consists of things and experiences that remind me of growing up and are a part of my personal history.

You can purchase 3 Going on 33 through Clifton’s Gallery on his website, as well as several other beautifully curated photos from his collection.  You can live vicariously through gorgeous photos of his travel adventures on his Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
