To Do: Labor Day Weekend

If you do not plan to be one of the thousands of people rushing to the beach this weekend for your last fill of summer, this blog post is for you!  We have put together a lineup of great local events (most of them FREE) for you to enjoy during your Labor Day Weekend.  We hope you take advantage of these great weekend festivities and enjoy your holiday!

FRIDAY, AUGUST 29

Oktoberfest Release Featuring Phil Komininski

  • Time: 3 pm – 10 pm
  • Location: Port City World Headquarters,
  • Admission: FREE, Tours – $10
  • Details: The Tasting Room opens at 3 p.m., and doesn’t close until 10 p.m. Have Puerto Rican empanadas and dishes when Borinquen Lunch Box rolls up at 5:30 p.m. The tour starts at 6:30 p.m. PHIL KOMINSKI of LDE hits the stage at 7 p.m.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 30

Old Town Farmers Market

  • Time: 7 am – 12 pm
  • Location: Market Square, 301 King Street, Alexandria, VA

  • Details: The nation’s oldest farmers market offers a variety of vendors, including baked goods, cut flowers, live plants, and crafts.

Del Ray Farmers Market

  • Time: 8 am – 12 pm
  • Location: Corner of Oxford and Mount Vernon Avenue
  • Admission: FREE
  • Details: The Del Ray Market features locally grown goods, like seasonal vegetables and fruits, as well as meats, eggs, fresh pasta and sauces, Amish cheese, yogurt, baked goods, eggs, jams and jellies year round.

Dog Days of Summer

  • Time: 10 am – 2 pm
  • Venue: National Museum of the Marine Corps, 1800 Jefferson Davis Highway, Triangle, VA
  • Admission: FREE
  • Details: Bring your family to the Museum to see military working dogs, birds of prey and various pet adoption agencies with animals looking for a home. Free admission, free parking.

FREE Summer Saturdays at The Corcoran

  • Time: 10 am – 5 pm
  • Venue: The Corcoran Gallery of Art, 500 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC
  • Admission: FREE
  • Details: Washington’s oldest art museum hosts the venerable and the visionary, the old and new, from Hudson School hubris to postwar pop and beyond.

National Book Festival

  • Time: 10 am – 10 pm
  • Venue: Walter E Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place, Washington, DC
  • Admission: FREE
  • Details: The 2014 festival has moved indoors, from the Mall to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and the new location comes with perks: The festival has added three pavilions and extended its hours until 10 p.m. Scheduled speakers include retired Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor, former poet laureate Billy Collins and National Book Award-winner E.L Doctorow, along with more than 100 others.

Challenge #2: Yacht Race

  • Details: Team Alexandria (Old Dominion Boat Club) v. Team Britain (British Defence Staff, UK Embassy), as part of Alexandria’s friendly rematch with the British. Take part in the start of this race!

The BIG Maze

  • Time: 11 am – 5 pm
  • Location: The National Building Museum, 401 F Street, NW, Washington, DC

  • Details: Inspired by ancient labyrinths, garden and hedge mazes from 17th- and 18-century Europe and modern American corn mazes, this large-scale maze made of birch plywood features several twists and turns for visitors.

15th Annual Clifton Labor Day Car Show

  • Time: 8 am – 3 pm
  • Location: Historic Clifton, Main Street, Clifton, VA
  • Admission: FREE
  • Details: The Clifton Labor Day Car Show is an open show featuring street rods, foreign, customs, antiques, trucks, muscle cars, motorcycles and more!Join us on September 1st, 2014 in historic Clifton, Virginia, and enjoy great cars, food, and music. There will be raffles as well as “Participant Pick” awards and specialty trophies. The first 250 show vehicles receive dash plaques. Free to spectators so please consider a donation!
